Sonardyne diver detection sonar selected for GSA
(September 2008) Sonardyne International Ltd has successfully completed negotiations to add the Sentinel diver detection sonar to the US General Services Administration (GSA) catalogue. From September 10th 2008 the complete Sentinel system including associated software and deployment options became available under GSA contract Number GS-07F-0531U.
This is the first time that Sonardyne has been added to the GSA and follows recent contracts, trials and the successful acceptance of the Sentinel system by the US Navy. GSA assists with procurement work for government agencies and as part of this effort it maintains the large GSA Schedule, which other agencies can use to buy goods and services. Eric Levitt, maritime security business development manager for Sonardyne said; “We are particularly proud of this achievement, it reflects an intensive 12 months of development, integration and co-operation with our US customers. It gives other potential federal customers the confidence and knowledge that they are selecting best value, best support and a proven platform already in use by other federal agencies.”
The Sentinel system is an innovative approach to the defence of strategic assets from underwater intrusion, sabotage, smuggling and attack. This includes any installation with a waterside perimeter, offshore energy infrastructure, ports and harbours, shipping and personal protection. Designed to operate within demanding environmental standards, the Sentinel sonar is a compact, lightweight, simple to operate platform that can be installed autonomously or integrated into a wider command and control system to provide total domain awareness. US Navy Chooses the new Sentinel Diver Detection System from Sonardyne
(March 2008) The US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has chosen Sonardyne International Ltd to supply multiple Sentinel sonar heads for the new Integrated Swimmer Defence System led by the Program Executive Office, Littoral Mine Warfare (PEO-LMW - PMS480). In addition to the equipment provision, Sonardyne has also been awarded a contract related to the integration and deployment of Sentinel systems as part of an expeditionary warfare requirement.
The contracts, valued in excess of US$1 million, follow successful trials in October 2007 when the Sentinel Intruder Detection Sonar system was shown to meet the US Navy's performance requirements for diver detection. Sentinel demonstrated rapid deployment and performance in an equipment package that is smaller, lighter and more cost effective than previous generations of anti-swimmer sonars.
Sentinel was developed by Sonardyne to meet the specific requirements of the expeditionary warfare community yet the system has already proved itself equally adaptable to other applications. Rob Balloch, strategic development director for Sonardyne commented; “Sonardyne's success in developing Sentinel so quickly has proved the benefits of a close working relationship with the customer and a dedicated engineering team focussed on the task”
Despite the use of sophisticated surface perimeter protection systems, underwater security has, until now, been acknowledged as the weakest link in the defence of ships and on-shore facilities. These have been vulnerable to underwater threats that include attack, sabotage or smuggling. Because of this, uses for Sentinel are expected to range from the protection of vessels such as cruise ships and superyachts, to underwater perimeter security for sensitive coastal assets including power stations, oil and gas terminals, strategic industry and ports and harbours.
Sonardyne has developed its Sentinel sonar by bringing together a world class team of scientists, engineers, and consultants with over 140 man-years of experience in the design and development of similar systems. The company is based in Yateley, UK with regional operating subsidiaries in the USA, Singapore and Brazil. It is a world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced acoustic instruments and systems for accurate survey, positioning and tracking applications for the offshore and ocean sciences industries.

PortVision puts Coast Guard oil spill investigation in focus
Several beach goers found their favorite shorelines along the North County of San Diego closed in early June as a result of a several hundred gallon oil spill that washed onto dry land. The four-mile-long by one-mile-wide slick also cancelled a weekend surfing competition and had U.S. Coast Guard officials setting up a safety zone for three days.
The cost of the clean up alone was estimated at $60,000, according to local news reports, and this figure did not include loss of money to area businesses dependant on seasonal beach traffic or by the cancellation of the surfing event. And while the Coast Guard began searching for the offending party, it was akin to finding a needle in a haystack.
“It's incredibly difficult to track down those responsible for such a spill offshore,” said Coast Guard Lt. Jereme Altendorf. “Other than the oil itself, there were no witnesses or other evidence of blameworthiness.”

With a sonar head measuring just 44 cm tall by 33 cm diameter, the Sentinel sonar array is considerably smaller than any other system currently available. It nevertheless provides a full 360 degrees of coverage and is capable of reliably detecting underwater targets up to 800 metres away. Weighing less than 30 kg, the compact system is ideal for expeditionary operation as it is easily palletised and rapidly deployed. The system can be deployed in many different ways, including over the vessels side, mounted rigidly or on the seabed in a frame.
The practicality of Sentinels design makes it a realistic option for protecting a wide range of maritime assets. The extreme vulnerability of expeditionary warfare units in overseas ports can be significantly reduced by a Sentinel system that can also be used to protect any fixed installation with a water perimeter. This includes most of the worlds valuable oil and gas refineries, liquefied natural gas terminals and power stations. With many of these facilities already deploying conventional terrestrial security systems, including thermal imaging, radar and ground sensing devices, Sentinel now closes the defensive circle against intruders.
The reliable detection of underwater targets and their discrimination from marine mammals is a notoriously difficult problem. Sentinel overcomes this challenge by combining state-of-the-art sonar technology, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) processing units and automated detection, classification and tracking software. This has been proved in extensive trials over the past year to confirm a system that can work in a wide range of difficult acoustic underwater environments while ensuring that only genuine threats are highlighted. This minimises false alarms and reduces the dangerous tension that these can generate.
Sentinels unique configuration allows it to operate in stand-alone mode or networked with multiple sonar heads linked into a Command and Control (C2) system. As part of a comprehensive Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection afloat (ATFP) asset, Sentinels early warning capability will enable operators to deploy effective counter measures against underwater intruders in good time.
Sonardyne believes that any system that bombards an unskilled operator with confusing data and false alarms will soon be ignored so the operation of Sentinel is clear and intuitive. Because it is unlikely to be operated by trained sonar technicians, Sentinel has been designed for ease of use through the combination of advanced algorithms and a simple user interface.
Commenting on the launch of Sentinel, Rob Balloch strategic development director for Sonardyne said, "Sentinel is the first of a new generation of maritime security products to be released by Sonardyne. We have brought together many of the leading experts in their specialised disciplines to develop the unique technology that can deliver trusted solutions to the customer in the most challenging underwater conditions such as noisy, shallow harbours. We have listened to what the customers really wanted from a diver detection system and believe Sentinel is the first practical, cost-effective solution to the threat presented by underwater intruders."

Lustenau Austria and Dallas TX . – (June 11, 2007) – IDENTEC SOLUTIONS, the global leader in wireless tracking and tracing solutions that include award-winning intelligent long-range active RFID technology, announces the release of the first independently intelligent RFID tag.
April 30, 2007 – Houston, Texas – PortVison today announced the formal launch of its service in support of the major oil refineries and other waterway users in the ports of Beaumont and Port Arthur, Texas, and along the entire Sabine-Neches Waterway.
In doing so, PortVision provides a new level of clarity about current and past vessel and terminal activities within one of the most complex and sensitive waterways in the world.
PortVision provides authorized users with real-time transparency and visibility to all commercial vessels on the waterway. In addition, PortVision automatically logs all waterway activities, such as terminal arrivals and departures, point passing and port arrivals, sending alerts to interested parties by e-mail and cell phone text message. Managers can schedule key resources “just-in-time” by monitoring ship movement and key events remotely - even from their homes - using this new web-based service. PortVision takes existing, federally-mandated, collision avoidance signals provided by virtually all commercial vessels, and employs specialized, proprietary algorithms to interpret the millions of position signals received daily.
As a result, PortVision not only locates ships, but identifies key interactions among ships and between ships, barges and marine terminals. The system uses this information to provide key performance metrics that are the basis for improved efficiency, reduced cost and enhanced safety and security..
PortVision's capture and presentation of historical information also allows users to recover the facts of past incidents to verify claims for compensation relating to delays in ship unloading (demurrage) or identify vessels in proximity to specific locations. The system's historic playback feature allows users to visually recreate specific vessel and terminal activity dating back up to five years, and then produce detailed documentation associated with the activity.
Authorized users of the Sabine-Neches Waterway who did not attend the orientation sessions may still gain access to PortVision by contacting 858-586-0933 or visiting www.portvision.com.
